While watching the History Channel one night at his home, Tinker Hatfield learned of the way in which World War II fighter pilots would paint nose art onto the front ends of their aircrafts. It instantly hit him that, much like how a fighter plane will hover over its target before an attack, Michael Jordan could often be found floating around the perimeter – just before one of his signature drives and dunks. By simply reversing the nose art design found on the planes, Hatfield soon found himself designing one of the most legendary Air Jordan models, as he added two insets of translucent rubber, a boisterous 3M tongue and a molded asymmetrical collar to complete this classic.
